Women’s basketball: Olivet routs Marygrove, 83-56
Three starters scored in double figures, as the Olivet College women’s basketball team defeated Marygrove College, 83-56, this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Three starters scored in double figures, as the Olivet College women's basketball team defeated Marygrove College, 83-56, this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. With the win, the Comets get back to back to the .500 mark with a 3-3 overall record. The 27-point margin of the victory is the largest in a non-conference game since Jan. 23, 2008, when Olivet beat Rochester College, 73-34.
Senior Stefanie Lang led all players with 22 points and 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and the 30th of her career in a Comet uniform. Junior Shauni Hankins and senior Carli Reid each scored 16 points. Off the bench, sophomore Gabby Trudell nearly had her own double-double with eight points and seven rebounds.
After a 2-2 tie, the Comets scored 16 of the next 18 points to take a 20-4 lead at the 13:52 mark. Olivet eventually built its lead in the first half to as many as 21 points, 35-14. The Mustangs used a 10-0 run to cut its deficit down to 11 points, 35-24, but they would not get any closer. The Comets led by 17 points, 42-25, at the break.
Olivet scored 25 of the first 27 points to take its largest lead of the game, 67-27, at the midway point of the second half. Marygrove did not score its first two-point basket until there was 9:35 left in the game. The closest the Mustangs got was the 27-point margin of defeat.
For the game, Olivet made 33-of-69 baskets to 14-of-52 for Marygrove. Olivet made two more three-pointers. The Mustangs were able to shoot 25-of-34 from the free throw line to 12-of-21 for the Comets. Olivet out-rebounded them, 52-34.
Janeesa Jamierson scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Marygrove. Tiffany Bradford scored 11 points.
The Comets travel to play Rochester College Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The game is being played at Oakland Christian School in Auburn Hills.
