Senior Kelsey Campbell broke the MIAA single-season and career assists records to lead the 18th-ranked Olivet College women’s basketball team to an 89-72 win over Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College this evening at the Angela Athletic Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) broke the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) single-season and career assists records to lead the 18th-ranked Olivet College women's basketball team to an 89-72 win over Saint Mary's (Ind.) College this evening at the Angela Athletic Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
Campbell's 11 assists gives her 120 for the season and 302 for her career. The previous records were 114 by Kristen McDonald from Calvin in 2004-05 and 299 by Jodi Condron from Adrian in 1987-91. Campbell had 10 points to post her fifth double-double of the season.
Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) joined her in double figures with the scoring column with 30 points. She also pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds for her NCAA-leading 21st double-double of the season. Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) finished with 18 points, while junior Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) contributed 11 points.
The Belles scored the first basket of the game, but Olivet quickly tied the game on a Ciba basket and took the lead on a Reid layup. The Comets never trailed for the rest of the game. Olivet's lead at halftime, 18 points, 43-25, was its largest cushion in the opening 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Comets led by as many as 20 points twice, with the last time being 57-47 at the 14:11 mark. The closest Saint Mary's would get in the final 20 minutes was 12 points on three occasions.
Offensively, Olivet shot 49.3 percent (36-of-73) from the field, including 5-of-14 from behind the arc. The Belles made 30-of-67 baskets (44.8 percent). Both teams drained 12 free throws. The Comets out-rebounded Saint Mary's, 51-37.
For the Belles, Shanlynn Bias scored a team-leading 24 points. Ariana Paul posted a double-double, 19 points and 14 rebounds.
NOTES: With her 30 points, Lang moved into second-place on the single-season scoring list with 478 points. She needs only two points to surpass Audrey Graham, who had 479 in 2005-06. The assist records which Campbell broke include only the 47 MIAA games she has played in.
