Campbell’s and Lang’s double-doubles help women’s basketball team beat Kalamazoo, 82-73
Senior Kelsey Campbell and junior Stefanie Lang each posted a double-double to help the 23rd-ranked Olivet College women’s basketball team beat Kalamazoo College, 82-73, this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) and junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) each posted a double-double to help the 23rd-ranked Olivet College women's basketball team beat Kalamazoo College, 82-73, this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. With the win, the Comets won their 11th Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest to break the single-season mark.
Campbell was a rebound shy of a triple double, as she had 21 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. Lang led all players with 26 points and 17 rebounds for her NCAA-leading 19th double-double of the season. The 17 rebounds also allowed her to become the single-season school-record holder. Junior Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) joined them in double figures with 10 points.
The Hornets held a 6-5 lead at the 17:04 mark of the first half. Olivet scored six straight points to go up 11-6. The Comets eventually built their lead to as many as 24 points on two occasions in the opening 20 minutes. The last time was 44-20 at the 3:18 mark. Kalamazoo scored the last six points of the half to trail by 18 points, 44-26, at intermission.
Olivet led by 22 points, twice the second half, including 70-48 with 7:28 remaining in regulation. The nine-point margin would be the closest the Hornets would get.
Lang made 12-of-22 baskets, with two 3-pointers for her 26 points. The 12 made baskets also allowed her to break the single-season school record for field goals made. Campbell was 5-of-8, including two 3-pointers, and perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe for her 21 points. Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Nicole Antoine had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Kalamazoo. Perri Nicholson added 16, while India Hoskins had 14.
The Comets (19-3, 11-2 MIAA) are back in action Saturday afternoon when they play a 3 p.m. contest at Calvin College.
NOTES: The previous record for MIAA wins in a season was 10 by the 2012-13 team. Lang has 291 rebounds and 173 field goals made in 2013-14. The previous records were 285 rebounds by Esther Dykstra during the 1992-93 season and 168 field goals made by Audrey Graham during the 2006-07 season. Lang has also scored 426 points this season, which is the third-most in school history. Next up on the scoring list is Graham who had 459 in 2006-07 and 479 in 2005-06.
