The Olivet College women’s basketball team beat Adrian College, 71-59, today at the Merillat Center in Adrian. With the win, the Comets have broken the single-season school record for wins and also extended their win streak to 11 straight.
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team beat Adrian College, 71-59, today at the Merillat Center in Adrian. With the win, the Comets have broken the single-season school record for wins and also extended their win streak to 11 straight.
Adrian made the first basket of the game and built an eight-point lead four times in the first half, with the last time being 26-18 at the 4:57 mark. Olivet ended the half on a 15-1 run to the turn the deficit into a six-point lead, 33-27, at halftime.
The Comets continued the run into the second half, scoring 18 of the first 20 points to take its largest lead of the game, 51-29, with 13:03 remaining in regulation. Olivet led by 22 points one more time. The Bulldogs got as close as 11 points in the final minute of the game.
After shooting a sluggish 38.7 percent in the opening 20 minutes of play, the Comets did a better job in the second half at 54.2 percent to give them a 45.5 shooting percentage for the game. Olivet made seven baskets from behind the arc and 14-of-21 free throws. Adrian shot 36.7 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from the free throw line.
Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) led all scorers with 19 points, while fellow senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) contributed 16 points. Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season.
Casey Fougerousse came off the bench to Adriana with 16 points. Amy Van Gessel and LaQwana Dockery had 13 and 10 points, respectively. Van Gessel and Brigette Zavithsanos pulled down eight rebounds each.
The Comets (16-2, 8-1 MIAA) will travel to play Hope College next Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. Hope sits 1/2 game ahead of Olivet in the MIAA standings with an 8-0 record.
