Women’s basketball team defeats Trine, 66-57, for school-record ninth straight win
The Olivet College women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to a school-record nine straight games, as the Comets beat Trine (Ind.) University, 66-57, this afternoon at Hershey Hall in Angola, Indiana.
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to a school-record nine straight games, as the Comets beat Trine (Ind.) University, 66-57, this afternoon at Hershey Hall in Angola, Indiana.
The Thunder led by six points four different times, with the last one being 20-14 at the 9:07 mark. The Comets answered with an 8-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. Olivet continued to be up on Trine and led by as many as seven points twice, including 36-29 at halftime.
In the second half, the Thunder cut their deficit down to three points, 40-37. After calling a timeout, the Comets went on a 16-4 run to take a 15-point lead, 56-41, with 8:57 left in the game. Trine responded by eight of the next 10 points to trail by single digits, 58-49, at the 6:50 mark. The Thunder would get no closer for the rest of the contest.
For the game, Olivet shot 41% (24-of-58) from the floor and 61% (14-of-23) from the free throw line to 46% (22-of-48) and 48% (12-of-25) for Trine. The Comets out-rebounded the Thunder, 48-25, including a 15-1 edge in offensive boards.
Senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) paced Olivet with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Junior Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) joined her in double figures with 13 points. Senior Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) contributed 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Freshman Gabrielle Trudell (Mason) finished with nine points. Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) was held to eight points and eight rebounds. Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) dished out game-high eight assists.
For Trine, Kelsey Henselmeier led all scorers with 22 points. Kayla Dunn and Amy Newell each scored 11. Alivia Recker pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds.
The Comets (14-2, 6-1) will play the final game of the first half of their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule next Wednesday, Jan. 22, when Saint Mary's (Ind.) College visits The Cutler Event Center for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
NOTES: Olivet now has 14 wins, and needs only one more to tie both the 2012-13 and 1986-87 teams for most wins in a season. The previous record for most consecutive wins was eight by the 1986-87 team.
