Women’s basketball team defeats Manchester, 83-70
The Olivet College women’s basketball team defeated Manchester (Ind.) University, 83-70, this afternoon as part of the Albion College Holiday Tournament and inside Kresge Gymnasium in Albion. The Comets will play Defiance (Ohio) University tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 2 p.m.
ALBION, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team defeated Manchester (Ind.) University, 83-70, this afternoon as part of the Albion College Holiday Tournament and inside Kresge Gymnasium in Albion. The Comets will play Defiance (Ohio) University tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 2 p.m.
In the win, junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) recorded her ninth straight double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds in only 19 minutes of action. Junior Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) contributed 19 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. Senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) finished with her own double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) scored nine points and dished out eight assists. Senior Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Olivet scored the first basket of the game, a three-pointer by Lang, and never looked back. The Comets went on to make their next four shots before the Spartans made their first, leading 11-0, at the 16:05 mark. Olivet stretched its lead to as many as 24 points, 35-11, with 1:27 left before halftime. The Comets settled for a 22-point lead, 39-17, at intermission.
Manchester cut its deficit down to 16 points, 51-35, in the first six minutes of the second half. Olivet pushed its lead back to 26 points three times, with the last time being 68-42 with 8:25 left in the game. The 13-point margin of defeat was the closest the Spartans would get for the rest of the contest.
Katie Arterburn came off the bench to lead Manchester with 11 points. Jenifer Lee added 10 points.
