Four double figure scorers aid women’s basketball team to 76-64 win over Adrian

OLIVET, Mich. – Four players reached double figures in the scoring column and senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) became the career assists leader, as the Olivet College women's basketball team defeated Adrian College, 76-64, this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
With an assist on a basket by junior Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) at the 19:17 mark of the second half, Campbell officially became Olivet's career leader with 365 assists. She finished the game with a team-leading six assists to give her 369 all-time helpers.
Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) and senior Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) each posted a double-double to lead the Comets. Lang scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Lauwers contributed 12 points and team-leading 12 rebounds. Reid and senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) joined them in double figures with 15 points apiece.
There were two tied scores and three lead changes in the first seven minutes and 19 seconds of the game. After Olivet led 12-11, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 19-12, with 11:22 left before halftime. The Comets responded with a 17-2 run to gain their biggest lead, 29-21, at the 3:41 mark. Adrian scored the final six points of the half to trail by only two points, 29-27, at intermission.
That would be the closest the Bulldogs would get for the remainder of the game. Olivet opened the second half by scoring 25 of the first 34 points to stretch its lead to as many as 18 points, 54-36. The only time Adrian would get its deficit into single digits was with 1:31 left after Jasmyne Owens made back-to-back three-pointers.
For the game, the Comets drained 27-of-62 baskets, including 4-of-8 from behind the three-point arc, and 18-of-29 free throws for their 76 points. The Bulldogs made 24 baskets, with eight treys and only 8-of-20 tosses from the charity stripe. Olivet had a 56-38 advantage in rebounding, including a +17 edge in defensive boards.
LaQwana Dockery posted a double-double, 22 points and 10 rebounds, for Adrian (4-4, 2-1 MIAA). Owens had 10 points off the bench.
The Comets (7-2, 2-1 MIAA) are now off until Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 28-29, they participate in the Albion College Holiday Classic. Olivet plays Manchester (Ind.) University Saturday night at 6 p.m., and Defiance (Ohio) College Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
NOTES: The previous assists record was 364 by Amy Brackenwagen from 2004-08. Lang has posted eight straight double-doubles for the Comets.
