Women’s basketball team overpowers Alma, 99-51
Juniors Stefanie Lang and Carli Reid each posted a double-double to lead five double figure scorers, as the Olivet College women’s basketball team overpowered Alma College, 99-51, today at the Art Smith Arena in Alma.
ALMA, Mich. – Juniors Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) and Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) each posted a double-double to lead five double figure scorers, as the Olivet College women's basketball team overpowered Alma College, 99-51, today at the Art Smith Arena in Alma.
Lang scored a game-high 29 points to go along with 13 rebounds for her seventh straight double-double. Reid had a game-high 14 rebounds as well as 10 points. Freshman Jillian Nickels (Byron Center) came off the bench to score 15 points. Seniors Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) and Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) nearly had double-doubles. Ciba scored 14 and dished out eight assists, while Campbell had 13 points and nine assists.
The Comets scored the first two points of the game and never looked back. Olivet's first double digit lead was 15-4 at the 12:39 mark when Lang made a layup after grabbing an offensive rebound. The Comets built their lead to as many as 20 points, 37-17, after Campbell drained a three-pointer with 3:53 left before halftime. The Scots fought back and trailed by only 11 points, 45-34, at the break.
In the first 20 minutes, Olivet shot a sizzling 51.3 percent (20-of-39) from the floor and out-rebounded Alma, 26-11, including a 10-1 edge in offensive rebounds. The Scots kept the game close by making more free throws (12) than field goals (10) in the first half.
The Comets kept the strong play in the second half, with the final 48-point margin being its largest lead of the game. In the second 20 minutes of the game, Olivet made 22-of-34 shots (64.7 percent), while Alma made only 6-of-37 baskets (16.2 percent).
For the game, the Comets posted season-highs in field goal percentage (57.5 percent-42-of-73), assists (25) and steals (10). Olivet also had a 56-30 edge in total rebounds. Lang was near perfect, as she made 12-of-14 baskets and 5-of-5 free throws for her 29 points. Sophomore McKenzie Skiendziel (Battle Creek/Lakeview) scored nine points. Sophomore Dallas Austin (St. Johns) contributed seven points and three steals.
Erica Hansen paced the Scots with 13 points. Kassidi Adams added 12 points, all in the first half. Raenna Zink grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
The Comets host Adrian College next Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
