Campbell’s and Lang's double-doubles help women’s basketball team defeat Lawrence Tech, 82-71
The Olivet College women’s basketball team stepped out of conference play for a fourth time this season and won for the fourth time, defeating Lawrence Technological University, 82-71, this afternoon at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team stepped out of conference play for a fourth time this season and won for the fourth time, defeating Lawrence Technological University, 82-71, this afternoon at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. Senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) posted a double-double, 24 points and 15 assists, to lead the Comets. Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) also contributed with her fifth straight double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) and junior Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) finished with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Olivet scored the first six points of the game before doubling their lead, 23-11, at the 8:32 mark. The Blue Devils fought back and trailed by only six points, 38-32, at halftime. The Comets led by eight points, 42-34, with 18:20 left in the game. Lawrence Tech responded with an 11-3 run to tie the game at 45-45.
Olivet built its lead back to five points, 54-49, at the 14:21 mark. The Blue Devils did not give up, going on a 17-7 run to take their largest lead of the game, 66-61, with 7:02 left. The Comets came back with a 12-0 scoring run to take a seven-point lead, 73-66. Overall, Olivet limited Lawrence Tech to five points – one basket and three free throws – in the final seven minutes of the contest.
For the game, the Comets made 28-of-62 field goals (45.2 percent) to 29-of-67 (43.3 percent) for the Blue Devils. The difference in the game was Olivet drained 22-of-28 free throws (78.6 percent) to 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) for Lawrence Tech.
Four Blue Devils reached double figures in the scoring column, led by Hali Butler's 15 points. Allison Kitchen scored 13, while Anne Tucker and Jazmine Brown each had 12. Kitchen also pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds.
The Comets will take next week off for exams and return to the court Sunday, Dec. 8, when they host North Park (Ill.) University at 3 p.m.
NOTES: With her 15 assists, Campbell now has 344 in her career. She needs only 21 to become the all-time leader at Olivet. Amy Brackenwagen dished out 364 assists from 2004-08. Campbell also now holds the top five marks at Olivet for single-game assists.
