Lang and Reid post double-doubles in 81-60 win over Oberlin
Juniors Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) and Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) each posted a double-double to lead the Olivet College to an 81-60 win over Oberlin (Ohio) College tonight in a non-conference women’s basketball game tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Juniors Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) and Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) each posted a double-double to lead the Olivet College to an 81-60 win over Oberlin (Ohio) College in a non-conference women's basketball game tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
In only 19 minutes of action, Lang led all players with 26 points and 17 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double to open the 2013-14 season. Reid added 15 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) joined them in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore McKenzie Skiendziel (Battle Creek/Lakeview) finished with nine points, while seniors Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) and Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) each contributed eight points. Campbell and Ciba also dished out eight and six assists, respectively.
Olivet scored the first basket of the game and never looked back. The Comets built their lead to as many as 13 points at the 4:25 mark of the opening half after Skiendziel drained her third triple of the half. The Yeowomen trimmed their deficit down to single digits, 36-28, with 2:43 left before halftime when Christina Marquette made a free throw to complete a three-point play. Olivet pushed its lead back to double figures until Oberlin scored the final four points of the half to make the score, 40-32, at the break.
The Yeowomen cut the Comets' lead down to seven points, 43-36, in the first two minutes and 14 seconds of the second half. From there, Olivet went on a 17-1 run for a 60-37 lead. Oberlin got as close as 17 points before the Comets gained their largest lead of the game, 81-56, with 48 seconds remaining in the game.
For the game, Olivet shot 44 percent (33-of-75) from the floor to 28.4 percent (21-of-74) for the Yeowomen. The Comets out-rebounded Oberlin, 63-41, including a +9 advantage off the offensive glass. Olivet also distributed the ball well, with 19 assists to five for the Yeowomen.
Lindsey Bernhardt came off the bench to lead Oberlin with 19 points. Marquette joined her in double figures with 13 points. Eleanor Van Buren grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds.
The Comets will rest tonight and host Lawrence Technological University tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
