Comeback falls just short as women’s basketball team loses to Albion, 61-60
The Olivet College women’s basketball team nearly erased a 16-point deficit, as Albion College hung on to beat the Comets, 61-60, today in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular-sseason finale for both schools at Kresge Gymnasium in Albion.
Campbell breaks single-season assists record
ALBION, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team nearly erased a 16-point deficit, as Albion College hung on to beat the Comets, 61-60, today in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular-sseason finale for both schools at Kresge Gymnasium in Albion.
There were two tied scores and two lead changes in the first four minutes of the game. After Olivet led 6-5, the Britons went on a 16-1 scoring run to take a 14-point lead, 21-7. The Comets came back and trailed by 10 points, 27-17, before Albion ended the half on an 8-2 run for its largest lead of the game, 35-19, at the break.
The Comets scored the first seven points of the second half to trail by single digits, 35-26. The Britons answered with a 6-2 run to push their lead back to 13 points, 41-28. Olivet chipped away at their deficit and trailed by only one point, 57-56, with 2:07 left in the game. Albion extended their lead back to five on a pair of free throws and a basket at the 1:28 mark.
The Comets responded with a basket by sophomore Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) to make the score 61-58. Albion missed three shots before Olivet grabbed a defensive rebound. With nine seconds left, senior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady) made the score 61-60. The Britons missed a chance to add to their lead at the free throw line with seven seconds remaining. DeShazor pulled down the rebound, but a last second basket by the Comets was also off the mark.
DeShazor and Lang each finished with 14 points for the Comets, while junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) contributed 11 points and eight assists. With those assists, Campbell has 136 this season to break Olivet's single-season record, which she previously held with 135 during the 2011-12 season. Senior Sydney Radde (Stevensville/Lakeshore) scored seven points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Katie Thompson came off the bench to lead the Britons with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and seven rebounds. Tanner Johnson scored 13, while Brett deBear and Danielle Fraley had 11 and 10, respectively.
The Comets have secured the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament, and will play at No. 2 seed Hope College next Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. Hope and Calvin both had 15-1 MIAA records, but a coin flip was won by the Knights, giving them the No. 1 seed.
