Women’s basketball team falls to MIAA leader Calvin, 87-61

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Playing a nationally-ranked opponent for the second straight game, the Olivet College women's basketball team was defeated by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) leader Calvin College, 87-61, this afternoon at the Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids. The Knights entered the game ranked No. 2 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
Olivet led only briefly, 5-4, before Calvin went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. The Comets got their deficit down to five points once, but they weren't able to get any closer. The Knights led by as many as 25 points, 42-17, and then took a 42-20 lead at halftime. The closest Olivet managed to get in the second half was 20 points on three occasions.
Junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) recorded a double-double, 20 points and 11 rebounds, to lead the Comets. She also had five assists and is only seven shy of tying her own single-season record of 135. Junior Rachael Wagner (Clinton Twp./Fraser) came off the bench to score a season-high eight points.
Three-time reigning MIAA Most Valuable Player Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 32 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks. Maria DeKuiper and Julia Hilbrands both scored 11 points, while Ally Wolffis grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Comets will travel to play Albion College for their last MIAA regular season game next Saturday, Feb. 16. Tip-off at Kresge Gym is 3 p.m.
