Campbell breaks MIAA record with 16 assists in 79-66 win over Alma
Junior Kelsey Campbell broke the MIAA and school single-game record with 16 assists and senior Sydney Radde posted a double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds, to lead the Olivet College women’s basketball team to a 79-66 win over Alma College tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) broke the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and school single-game record with 16 assists and senior Sydney Radde (Stevensville/Lakeshore) posted a double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds, to lead the Olivet College women's basketball team to a 79-66 win over Alma College tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The previous assists record was 15 by Autumn Charnley of Albion against Hope on Jan. 20, 2007.
Also scoring in double figures was senior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady) with 19 and sophomore Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) with 17. Radde also finished the game with five of Olivet's nine blocks. Offensively in the game, the Comets shot a season-best 63.5 percent (33-of-52) from the floor, including 69 percent (20-of-29) in the first half. Olivet also out-rebounded the Scots, 44-35.
The Comets scored the first basket of the game and never looked back. Olivet led by six points, 20-14, six minutes into the game. Alma came back twice to cut its deficit down to two points twice, with the last time being 22-20. The Comets quickly pushed their lead back to six and eventually built it to as many as 11, 42-31, with 2:18 left before halftime. The teams traded baskets, and Olivet led 44-33 at the break.
In the second half, the Comets extended their lead to 17 points, 64-47, after senior Mellissa Bageris (Milford) made a three-pointer at the 10:37 mark. Alma got no closer than nine points for the rest of the game.
Mary Schlicher was the only Scot in double figures with 13 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds.
The Comets, who improve their overall record to 14-7 and MIAA mark to 9-3, will host Kalamazoo College for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m. The 14 wins ties for second-most in school history for a single-season, with the record being 15 by the 1986-87 team.
