Women’s basketball team comes from behind to beat Rochester, 62-58
The Olivet College women’s basketball team erased a 20-point deficit in the first half to stun non-conference rival Rochester College, 62-58, this evening at Oakland Christian High School in Auburn Hills.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team erased a 20-point deficit in the first half to stun non-conference rival Rochester College, 62-58, this evening at Oakland Christian High School in Auburn Hills.
The Warriors built their 20-point lead, 27-7, at the 8:30 mark of the opening half. The Comets came back and trailed by only 12 points, 36-24, after senior Mellissa Bageris (Milford) made a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
Olivet started the second half with a 10-2 run to cut its deficit down to four points, 38-34, with 16:10 left in the game. Three times, the Comets closed to within three points, with the last time being 50-47 at the 8:01 mark. Rochester then went on an 8-1 run to stretch its lead back to double digits, 58-48, with 4:33 remaining.
From there, Olivet scored the final 14 points of the game. The Comets did not take their first lead of the game until there was 1:16 left when sophomore Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) made a layup. The Warriors missed two baskets before with 22.8 seconds left, junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) made a three-pointer for the final margin.
For the game, Olivet shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the floor, including 46.3 percent (6-of-13) from behind the arc. Rochester made 19-of-62 (30.6 percent) baskets, with 11 three-pointers.
The Comets had a balanced scoring attack, led by Lang's 14 points. Bageris and senior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady) each scored 12. Campbell had 10 points to go along with eight assists. Senior Sydney Radde (Stevensville/Lakeshore) scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. Lang and junior Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) shared team-high honors with nine rebounds apiece.
Sam Tomaschko posted a double-double, 25 points and 10 rebounds, to lead the Warriors.
Olivet will resume its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule Saturday when it welcomes Saint Mary's (Ind.) College to The Cutler Event Center for a 3 p.m. game.
