KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) scored a career-high 26 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, as the Olivet College women's basketball team beat Kalamazoo College, 67-59, today at the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo. The win snapped Olivet's four-game losing streak.
There were five lead changes in the first 12 minutes, 30 seconds of the game. After the only tied score at 16-16 in the first half, the Comets went on a 13-4 run to take their largest lead of the half at 29-20. The Hornets scored four of the last six points of the half to trail by seven points, 31-24, at the break.
In the second half, Olivet stretched its lead back to nine points, 43-34, with 10:13 left in the game. Over the next four minutes, Kalamazoo went on an 11-1 run to take its first lead of the game, 45-44.
After three tied scores, 47-47, 49-49, 51-51, the Hornets ended the game on a 4-1 scoring spurt to make the score 55-52. Campbell then made the off-balanced three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.
In the extra session, Kalamazoo scored the first basket to go up 57-55. From there, the Comets outscored the Hornets, 12-2, to steal the win. Olivet was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line in overtime.
For the game, the Comets made 25 baskets, including three 3-pointers, and 14 free throws. The Hornets made 22 baskets, with four triples, and 11 free throws. Olivet turned the ball over three less times, 24-27.
For Olivet, Campbell made 9-of-16 baskets, including two from behind the arc, to go along with 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line for her 26 points. She also had a team-leading six assists. Senior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady) joined her in double digits with 10 points, while junior Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Emily Lindsay paced the Hornets with 17 points. Nicole Antoine had 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Comets return to the court next Wednesday, Jan. 9, when they travel to play Alma College at 6 p.m. The game is part of doubleheader at the Art Smith Arena, as the Olivet men will also play the Scots after the women's game.
