Women’s basketball team opens MIAA play with 72-63 win at Trine

The first eight and half minutes of the game featured five tied scores and three lead changes, and neither team led by more than three points. After the Comets led 17-15, they went on an 11-3 run to take a double digit lead for the first time at 28-18 at the 7:21 mark.
The Thunder trimmed their deficit down to six points on two occasions, with the last time being 30-24 with 4:59 left before the break. Olivet restored order and took its largest lead of the game, 40-25, at the 1:42 mark. The Comets took a 43-30 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
Three minutes into the second half, Olivet took its biggest lead of the game, 51-34, when junior Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) made only her third career 3-pointer. Trine battled back and pulled to within single digits for the first time, 58-49, with 11:30 left in the game.
The Thunder got as close as seven points three times. The final time was 61-54 with 9:37 remaining in the game. The Comets stretched their lead back to 14 points, 70-56, at the 3:46 mark.
For the game, Olivet shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the floor, including 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from behind the three-point arc. The Comets had 20 assists to 16 turnovers, while forcing Trine to turn the ball over 15 times.
Junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) led Olivet with a career-high 22 points, including 6-of-9 shooting from three-point land. Senior Sydney Radde (Stevensville/Lakeshore) joined her in double figures with 12 points, while senior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady) had 11.
Lauwers finished with nine points and team-leading 12 rebounds. Junior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) had a solid overall game with five points, two steals, three rebounds and eight assists.
For Trine, Sydney Spragg led all scorers with a career-best 38 points.
Olivet will travel to play Saint Mary's (Ind.) College Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
