Women’s basketball team opens season with 96-84 win at North Central
The Olivet College women’s basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 96-84 win over the host North Central College Cardinals tonight at the Chicago Marriott Naperville Tip-Off Tournament. The Comets will play Saint Mary’s (Minn.) University tomorrow afternoon at noon CT/1 p.m. ET.
Lang scores 23 points in her Olivet debut
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Olivet College women's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 96-84 win over the host North Central College Cardinals tonight at the Chicago Marriott Naperville Tip-Off Tournament. The Comets will play Saint Mary's (Minn.) University tomorrow afternoon at noon CT/1 p.m. ET.
Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) made a nice Olivet debut, as she posted game-highs in points (23) and rebounds (nine) in only 17 minutes of action. She made 10-of-14 baskets, including one 3-pointer, and 2-of-2 free throws. Senior Kaleigh Hill (Niles) scored a career-best 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 chances from the charity stripe in 19 minutes. Senior Sydney Radde (Stevensville/Lakeshore) joined them in double figures with 16 points. Hill and Radde each grabbed eight rebounds, as the Comets out-rebounded the Cardinals, 55-45.
Junior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) recorded a double-double, 10 points and 10 assists, and made six steals in her Olivet debut. Junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) also had a solid game with seven points and six assists. Junior Rachael Wagner (Clinton Twp./Fraser) had four steals.
The Comets led by as many as 15 points, 59-44, in the first half after freshman Mckenzie Skiendzel (Battle Creek/Lakeview) nailed a 3-pointer. Olivet settled for a 59-46 lead at halftime. Olivet stretched its lead to 30 points, 84-54, with 11:26 left in the game when Hill made a jumper. The closest the Cardinals would get was the 12-point margin at the end of the game.
Following tomorrow's game, the Comets will be off until next Saturday, Nov. 24, when they host Manchester (Ind.) University in their home-opener. Tip-off inside The Cutler Event Center is 3 p.m.
NOTES: The 96 points scored by Olivet are the fourth most in a school history for a single-game. The 23 points scored by Lang are the most for an Olivet player in a game since Olivia Yarrell had 29 at Ohio Wesleyan University on Dec. 29, 2009.
