Bio

Matthew Gay is in his fifth season on the outdoor recrreation coaching staff at The University of Olivet in 2023-24. After serving as the head coach for the clay target program for four years, he stepped into assistant coach for the program in December 2023.

Prior to joining the Olivet staff, Gay served as the head shotgun coach for the Michigan State University (MSU) shooting sports team since April 2017. While there, he led the Spartans to the skeet and sporting clays championship at the 2018 SCTP American Team Nationals and the skeet championship at the 2019 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) American Team Nationals. In addition, MSU was the Division III skeet and sporting clays champion, and placed third overall at the 2018 SCTP Collegiate Nationals. In addition, the team won state titles in skeet and sporting clays.

Prior to his time at MSU, Gay was the founder, president and head coach of the Upper Peninsula Youth Shotgun sports organization and Chain of Lakes Youth Sports Organization. He is an NRA credentialed shotgun coach and instructor. Gay serves as a state advisor for SCTP Michigan and vice president of the board of directors for the Michigan Scholastic Clay Target program. He is also a registered National Sporting Clays Association competitor, and is the owner of Sport Shooting Specialties LLC and founder and instructor for Tri-Sect Shooting School. Gay has been a regular contributor and writer for Clayshooting USA and Trapshooting USA magazines.
