Softball team shutout twice at Hope
The Olivet College softball team was shutout by Hope College in both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader this afternoon at Wolters Stadium in Holland.

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team was shutout by Hope College in both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader this afternoon at Wolters Stadium in Holland.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
- The Flying Dutch took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Hayley Reitsema.
- Hope added to its lead on a solo home run by Katie Singer in the third inning.
- The Flying Dutch plated four unearned runs – one in the fourth and three in the fifth – to end the game early due to the eight-run mercy rule.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet was held to three hits – double by senior Taylor Smith and singles by sophomore Nikole Kern and freshman Courtney Willson.
- Freshman Bekah VanDam was charged with the pitching loss after surrendering eight runs (three earned) on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings.
FOR THE FLYING DUTCH
- Hope had eight hits, all by a different player.
- Reitsema and Sammi Adams each had two RBI.
- Sydney Jones earned the complete game win in the circle. She struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
- The Flying Dutch plated one run in the first inning on an RBI-double by Sierra Mutschler.
- Hope took advantage of two Comet errors to push across four unearned runs in the second inning.
- The Flying Dutch capped their scoring with a single tally in the fifth and four runs in the seventh.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet recorded four hits in the game, including a 2-for-2 performance by freshman Taylor Shellenberger.
- Junior Konnor Geiger had only extra base hit, with a double.
- Freshman Gracie Boyle started in the circle, yielding six runs (two earned) on nine hits in five innings.
- Senior Carrie Chamberlain tossed two innings of relief, allowing four earned runs on six hits. She struck out three.
FOR THE FLYING DUTCH
- Mutschler, Rietsema and Noelle Jackson finished with three hits apiece.
- Shay Pinhey recorded three RBI.
- Katie Singer was the winning pitcher.
