Softball team swept at Alma, 7-0 and 9-1

ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team lost twice to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) co-leader Alma College, 7-0 and 9-1, this afternoon at Scots Park in in Alma.
Alma used three hits to score two runs in the first inning of game one. The Scots added to their score with one run in the second inning and three more runs in the third inning for a 6-0 advantage. Alma extended its lead to 7-0 on an unearned run in the fifth inning. The Comets kept the Scots off the scoreboard in the sixth inning to make the game go a full seven innings.
At the plate, Olivet had two hits – singles by junior Ashlynn Grubb and sophomore Konnor Geiger. Junior Carrie Chamberlain was the losing pitcher after surrendering all seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits. She struck out three and walked three in six innings.
In the nightcap, Alma scored two runs in the top half of the first inning. The Comets answered with a run in their half of the first. Junior Taylor Smith hit a leadoff double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Haley Reed and scored on an infield single by Chamberlain. Geiger reached on an error to put two runners on base but a ground out ended the inning.
Back-to-back two-out hits scored two runs for the Scots in the third inning to make the score 4-1. Olivet had a chance for a big inning in the bottom half of third when it loaded the bases on two walks and an error but a strikeout looking stopped the rally. Alma increased its lead to 6-1 with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning. Single tallies for the Scots in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings created the final 9-1 score.
For the game, the Comets recorded the two first-inning hits. Chamberlain suffered another pitching loss, giving up all nine runs (five earned) on 13 hits in seven innings.
Olivet will play its final two league doubleheaders at home inside the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. On Friday, the Comets face Adrian College at 3:30 p.m., and on Saturday, they host Calvin College at 1 p.m.
