OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) champion Trine (Ind.) University, 10-0 and 12-4, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
In the opener, the Thunder scored two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second, two in the fourth and three in the sixth inning to end the game early because of the mercy-rule. The Comets were held to only two base hits – singles by sophomore Ashlynn Grubb in the third inning and freshman Kris Forest in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Jessica Palumbo reached base safely twice on walks, while Grubb, freshman Konnor Geiger and sophomore Devon Mayse also drew base on balls. Grubb was shouldered with the pitching loss after giving up six earned runs on 10 hits in four innings. Freshman Becca Neal tossed two innings of relief, allowing three runs on two hits.
In the nightcap, Trine plated three runs in the first, two runs in the second and seven runs in the third inning to take a 12-0 lead. Meanwhile, Olivet was limited to one hit, a single by Forest, in the first four innings of play.
The Comets did not go down quietly, as they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs in the fifth inning. Palumbo led off with a single and went to second on a fielding error on a batted ball by sophomore Christine Wood. Mayse then lined a double into the left-center field gap to score both Palumbo and Wood. After an out, senior Ashley Milheim hit a double to move Mayse to third.
Sophomore Kelsey Scheenks kept the inning alive with an RBI-single to plate Mayse and advance Milheim to third base. Grubb then stroked a single to left field to score Milheim with the final run of the inning.
Offensively, Olivet had just the aforementioned six hits, all by a different player. Grubb started in the circle, and yielded five runs on six hits in two innings. Freshman Delaney Maki threw an inning, and gave up the seven runs on eight hits. Neal pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Comets look to bounce back Saturday when they host Kalamazoo College. First pitch from game one is slated for 1 p.m.
