OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team dropped both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader to Alma College, 2-0, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between Comet sophomore Ashlynn Grubb and Scot sophomore Morgan Stratton. Alma used two Olivet errors to score its first run in the second inning. The Comets left the tying run stranded in scoring position in the fourth inning. The Scots took advantage of another Olivet error to plate their second run in the sixth inning. The Comets brought the tying run to the dish in the seventh but failed to push across any runs.
Grubb allowed the two unearned runs on three hit, while Stratton yielded eight hits. Grubb went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Freshman Konnor Geiger also had a double. Five other Olivet players each had one hit.
Alma scored a run in the first inning in game two. The Comets came back to take a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth inning. Geiger hit a leadoff single before Grubb moved her to second with a single. Freshman Kris Forest then lined a single into right field to plate Geiger and advance Grubb to third base. Following a pitching change and an out was recorded, freshman Larissa Ludwick hit the ball back to the pitcher, who had a bad throw to the plate and Grubb scored the go-ahead run.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Scots sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on six hits to regain the lead at 8-2. After retiring Olivet in order in the top half of fifth, Alma plated two runs in the bottom half to earn the 10-2 mercy-rule victory.
The Comets were held to six hits, including two apiece for Forest and Geiger. Grubb and freshman Haley Reed each had a hit. Freshman Delaney Maki suffered the pitching loss after giving up eight runs on 10 hits in four innings.
Olivet looks to snap a losing streak next Wednesday, April 8, when it travels to play Albion College at 3:30 p.m.
