CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Sophomore Ashlynn Grubb struck out 10 batters and faced only one batter more than minimum, as the Olivet College softball team blanked Wisconsin Lutheran College, 3-0, in its final game at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside the Cape Coral Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Florida. Olivet's final game against Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College was cancelled due to a lack of players for the Lions.
The Comets scored two runs in the fourth inning. Grubb and freshman Kris Forest reached on back-to-back singles and then freshman Larissa Ludwick walked to load the bases. After an out was recorded, freshman Madison Spry looped a single into shallow right field to score Grubb and re-load the bases. Freshman Konnor Geiger drew a walk to bring home sophomore Chantel Johnston, who pinch ran for Forest.
Olivet added an insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning. Senior Ashley Milheim was hit by a pitch and went all the way to third base on a single down the right field line by Grubb. Ludwick then delivered a RBI-single through the left side of the infield to score Milheim.
The Warriors' first base runner reached in the third inning on a base hit. A second runner got on base in the bottom half of the seventh but was taken off the bases with a lineout double play.
Grubb needed 100 pitches to earn her fifth win of the season. Grubb and Ludwick each finished the game with two hits. Also recording hits were Geiger and Spry.
The Comets are scheduled to make their northern debut Wednesday, March 25, with a doubleheader at Franklin (Ind.) College. First pitch from game one is slated for 3:30 p.m.
