FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the third consecutive day, the Olivet College softball team has posted a 1-1 record at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Comets started the morning with a 9-1 run-rule win over Northland (Wis.) College and ended the day with an 8-4 loss to Medaille (N.Y.) College.
Northland scored an unearned run in the top half of the first. The Comets pushed across five runs in the bottom half of the third. Highlighting the inning was a grand slam home run by senior Alison Iuelle (Kelloggsville) and a RBI-double by junior Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic). Olivet capped its scoring with four runs in the fourth inning. Two runs came in after Comets drew bases-loaded walks and a third run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. The Lumberjills went down in order in the fifth inning to end the game early because of the eight-run mercy rule.
In the circle, freshman Maddie Siebenmark (Bridgman) threw a complete game, four-hitter, as she needed only 68 pitches to earn first collegiate win. At the plate, Iuelle and senior Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston) each recorded two base hits and two runs scored. Siebenmark and senior Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) also scored two runs apiece.
Medaille batted around and scored six runs in the top of the second inning. Olivet responded with a pair of runs in its half of the second frame. The Mavericks got one run back on a solo homer in the third. The Comets made the score 7-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Medaille capped the game's scoring with a single tally in the fifth.
At the plate, Lenard went 3-for-4, with three singles in her first three plate appearances to go along with two RBI. Iuelle and freshman Lorren Springer (White Pigeon/Constantine) recorded two hits apiece. Iuelle also scored two runs. Sophomore Jessica Duell (Ionia) suffered her first pitching loss of the season, as she gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked two batters.
The Comets will take tomorrow off and play two games Monday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex. Olivet plays Nazareth (N.Y.) College at 1 p.m. and Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) College at 3 p.m.
