Men’s volleyball team swept by Carthage in MCVL-opener
The Olivet College men’s volleyball team was swept by Carthage (Wis.) College, 25-18, 25-13, 25-15 in its Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League opener tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's volleyball team was swept by Carthage (Wis.) College in its Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League opener tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Comets took an early 2-0 lead in the first set. Olivet maintained a one-point lead on four more occasions, with the last time being 6-5. The Red Men scored four straight points to go up 9-6. The Comets put two straight points on the scoreboard to close the gap back to a single point, 9-8. Carthage scored the next two points and Olivet would not get any closer for the rest of the set.
- The Red Men led the second set from start-to-finish.
- Carthage had a 3-1 lead in the third set. The Comets scored two points to even the set at 3-3. The Red Men responded a 6-0 run to gain a 9-3 lead. After Olivet cut its deficit in half, 10-7, Carthage scored seven consecutive points for a 17-7 advantage. The Comets were never able to recover from that run.
FOR THE COMETS
- Freshman Andrew McCormick recorded a team-high four kills.
- Senior Luke DeWitt and freshman Brock Pringle each had three kills.
- Freshman Mathew Caamal dished out 11 set assists.
- Defensively, DeWitt and junior Talen Schallhorn collected four digs apiece.
- Freshman Trent Robinson had three blocks, two assisted and one solo.
FOR THE RED MEN
- Marc Hansen finished with a match-high eight kills and .636 attack percentage.
- Matt Reinsel registered 29 set assists.
- Marc Hansen and Braeden Waumans each had five digs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Carthage was the preseason favorite to win the MCVL title, and is currently ranked No. 8 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
UP NEXT
- Olivet goes on the road for the first time this season next Friday, Feb. 3, when it plays Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
