The University of Olivet sweeps MIAA Men’s Indoor Athlete of the Week awards
HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – The University of Olivet has swept the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards. Senior Jordon Brown is the Track Athlete of the Week, while freshman DeVondre Chandler is the Field Athlete of the Week for their performances at the Central Michigan University / Jack Skoog Open.
Brown, a graduate of Niles High School, won the 60-meter dash (6.90) and 200-meter dash (22.22) and ran a leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay (3:31.13). His winning time broke the school record, while both the 60 time and converted 200 time (21.83) are No. 18 on the NCAA Division III Performance List. In addition, Brown took first place in the long jump (22 feet, 3-3/4 inches).
"Jordon had a phenomenal season opener in all of his events on Saturday," said Olivet head coach Karen Lutzke. "Each year, he gets better because of the consistency in his training and his development as a person and leader on our team. Jordon doesn't sit down during a track meet unless he is changing his shoes as he is always supporting his teammates unless he is on the track or runway."
Chandler, a graduate of Bath High School, won the high jump, as he cleared the bar at a school-record mark of 6 feet, 4-3/4 inches. The performance ranks second in the MIAA this winter.
"It was very exciting to see Devondre break our indoor high jump school record," stated Lutzke. "In his first collegiate competition, he broke a record that had stood since 2005. We are very excited to watch Devondre's development in his events over the next four years."
The Comets are back in action Saturday at the Wittenberg University / STEEMER Showcase in Springfield, Ohio. Field events get under way at 11 a.m., followed by running events at 11:30 a.m.
