FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College sophomore Jacob Smith has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Smith broke the school indoor record in the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 3 inches at the Defiance (Ohio) College Invitational. The performance placed him second of 32 competitors in the event. It is also the top mark in the MIAA this season, and ranks No. 20 on the NCAA Division III performance list.
"Jacob had a huge breakthrough in the shot put this weekend, as he is getting more comfortable in the ring," said Olivet head coach Karen Lutzke. "It is exciting to see the improvement he has made in our first few competitions. The future looks bright as he is only a sophomore and is already breaking school records."
Olivet travels to Hillsdale College for the Wide Track Classic on Friday and Saturday.
