Swimming & diving teams complete second day at MIAA Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming & diving teams have completed the second day of competition at the 2017 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships, hosted by Hope College and at the Holland Aquatic Center. After day two, the Comet men are in fifth-place with 101 points and the women also sit in fifth-place with 88 points.

FOR THE MEN                               

• Freshman Eric Wood and sophomore Lucas Bunn finished 14th (:22.41) and 16th (:22.82) respectively in the 50 freestyle. Wood's finals time was a season-best, while Bunn's prelim time, 22.81, was a season-best.
• The 200 freestyle relay quartet of Bunn, Wood, freshman Tom Decker and sophomore Kody Garcia placed fifth in a season-best time of 1:32.01.
• The 400 medley relay team of freshman Zach Meharg, senior Zak Gray, sophomore Bryan Plesner and Wood finished fifth with a season-best time of 3:49.40.
• Despite narrowly not making it back for the evening finals, Wood swam a season-best time of 5:03.73 in the 500-yard freestyle.
• Meharg just missed the cut for the finals, finishing the 200 individual medley in a season-best time of 2:08.65.
• Garcia had a season-best mark of 24.79 seconds in the 50 freestyle.
• By virtue of their preliminary scores, freshman Dalton Miner and senior Bryce Prudden placed 10th and 12th, respectively in the one-meter diving.

FOR THE WOMEN                                                    

• Senior Nicole Zerfas placed 16th in 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.50. During the preliminaries, she had a lifetime-best time of 2:28.55.
• The 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Katie Hansel, sophomore Delaney Graham, freshman Amelia Tomalka and Zerfas finished fifth in a season-best time of 1:44.04.
• The 400 medley relay quartet of sophomore Sabrina Butler, Zerfas, sophomore Samantha Butler and Hansel was sixth in a season-best time of 4:38.87.
• In the 50 freestyle, Hansel missed making the finals by .16 seconds at a season-best time of 25.85 seconds.
• Freshman Abbie Slater scored 254.25 points in the three-meter diving to finish in 10th-place.

UP NEXT

• The third day of the championships starts tomorrow morning with preliminaries at 10 a.m., and finals in the same events at 5:30 p.m. Events on Friday include the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and men's 3-meter diving.
