Swimming & diving: Olivet men finish in fifth, women in sixth at MIAA Championships
The Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams finished in fifth- and sixth-place at the 2015 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships tonight at the Holland Aquatic Center.
HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming & diving teams finished in fifth- and sixth-place at the 2015 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships tonight at the Holland Aquatic Center.
The Comet men totaled 167 points to finish five points ahead of sixth-place Alma College. The women's team had 159 points. Calvin College won its 11th straight women's championship with 783 points and the Knights repeated as men's champions with 863 points.
In the final individual swim of her collegiate career, Jazmin Johnson had Olivet's top finish, placing fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.77 seconds. The time was a career-best and the second-fastest in school history. Freshman Emma Cole was fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, stopping the clock with a season-best and the third-fastest time in school history at 18:19.59.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Taylor Howard finished second in the consolation heat to place 10th with a time of 2:08.71. Trey Jennings took third-place in the consolation heat of the 200-yard backstroke for an overall finish of 11th and life-time best mark of 2:02.60. In the 100-yard freestyle, Derek Beslock finished in 15th-place with a career-best time of 49.92.
The men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relays capped the championships with sixth-place finishes. The women's team of Cole, Johnson, Megan Dossey and Nicole Zerfas touched the wall in 3:48.51. The men's group of Beslock, Howard, Jennings and Zach Gray had a time of 3:21.33.
