OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet men's soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of its 2023 schedule with a 3-1 win over Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.
- Final Score: Olivet 3, Mount St. Joseph 1
- Location: Cutler Athletic Complex; Olivet, Michigan
- Records: Olivet 1-3-4 overall, Mount St. Joseph 1-7 overall
- Junior Zachary Stephan had had a couple early scoring chances for the Comets. His first shot was blocked by a defender and the second shot was stopped by the keeper.
- Olivet got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute. Sophomore Carter Scheel dribbled the ball down the right side of the field and into the 6-yard box, where he placed a low shot into the netting at the near post.
- The Lions leveled the score in the 32nd minute.
- The score stayed 1-1 at halftime.
- The Comets scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 76th minute. Freshman Michael Elzerman's initial shot was saved but not controlled by the goalie. Elzerman gathered the rebound and knocked the ball into the net.
- Less than two minutes later, sophomore Kyle Buchan ripped a shot into the net at the far post. Elzerman earned the assist on the goal.
- For the game, Olivet totaled 24 shots compared to 10 for Mount St. Joseph. Eleven of the 24 shots were on-goal.
- Scheel, Stephan and senior Noah Runnals each recorded four shots.
- Freshman Nolan Currier earned the win in goal. He played all 90 minutes in net and collected four saves.
- The Comets are now off until Tuesday, October 3, when they welcome Kalamazoo College to the Cutler Athletic Complex for the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game, starting at 5 p.m.
