HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team capped the 2015 season with a 4-1 loss to Hope College tonight at Van Andel Soccer Stadium in Holland.
"The guys put forth a gutsy display this evening in a game that could have meant nothing in terms of the standings," said Olivet head coach Dan Bulley. "Before the ball had been kicked we knew where we would finish in the final league standings."
Junior Michael Brait put the Comets ahead 1-0 in the 31st minute. Senior Joey Sieg served a ball up the field, and the ball was misplayed by the Flying Dutch goalkeeper. Brait bounced on the loose ball and rocketed a shot from 20 yards out into the center of the goal.
Hope's Alex Lindsey scored a pair of goals in a 72-seconds span to take a 2-1 halftime lead. The Flying Dutch added a pair of unassisted tallies in the second half for the final margin.
"We opened the game the brighter team and looked good value for our 1-0 lead," said Bulley. "Four mistakes cost us the game and the final result of 4-1 but the guys never gave up. In every defeat we look to find a positive and there were many this evening. Our two seniors, Joey and Ryan, went out on a high note after good performances.
"A special mention to Denver Bonkowski who played a great game and has proved himself to have developed immensely this season, and our captain Michael Brait for his goal and leadership throughout the entire season."
Olivet finished the game with eight shots, including three for Brait. Five others took one apiece. Three keepers saw action in net. Senior Ryan Grashik started and played the first 71 minutes, allowing three goals and making six saves. Freshman Noah Thelen played the next 15-1/2 minutes and gave up one goal. Sophomore Nathan Weeks completed the game in goal.
"Overall this season we have had a much stronger second half and were rooted to the bottom of the standings for a large part of conference play," said Bulley. "Through character and fight we pulled off of the bottom and showed teams we were not going to lay down and accept defeat.
"Our experience this year is a foreign one for many but I fully expect is to be stronger for it come next season. We will continue to strengthen in terms of quality and preparation for the next season must begin immediately. I also want to thank all players and staff for their efforts this season. Everybody played their part from start to finish and results aside, there were many wins in other areas."
