OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime decision to Alma College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
"I am very proud of the team today although the result was not the one we wanted come the final whistle," said Olivet head coach Dan Bulley. "We played our hearts out for 107 minutes, were strong at the back and Ryan Grashik kept us in the game on numerous occasions. We created and had chances to kill the game ourselves but it wasn't meant to be today."
The Scots had more chances to score in the first half, recording an 11-3 advantage in shots. Both teams took six shots in the second half. Alma fired in three shots in the first extra period before scoring the game-winning goal with 2:43 left in the second overtime period.
For the game, Olivet registered 10 total shots. Freshman Matthew Henderson topped the team with four shots, while six others each had one. Grashik played the entire game in goal and made six saves.
"What pleases me the most is the way we continue to learn," said Bulley. "Individuals are starting to recognize each other in a positive manner and we are all showing endeavor to make ourselves better people and better teammates. This kind of spirit only bodes well for the future for this young team.
"At the end of the game and not for the first time this season, the opposing coach came up and said he can't believe we are in the position we are in this season. It certainly helps to keep our heads up and we realize soccer is a cruel game at times and life is not always fair."
The Comets stay home to face Albion College Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
"As always, we will look forward to the next game," said Bulley. "I fully expect the lads to give their all and fight for the remainder of the season."
