ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer let a 2-0 lead slip away, as Alma College rallied to beat the Comets, 3-2, this afternoon at Scotland Yard in Alma.
"We had a great effort today," said Olivet head coach Dan Bulley. "Unfortunately, we could not hold on to a really well-crafted 2-0 lead early in the game. We failed to get out and stop a couple of shots at the top of the box and that is what undid us today."
Freshman Alistair Law scored the first Olivet goal in the 18th minute. Junior Gregory Petty and sophomore Jordan Terry were each given an assist on the goal. The Comets stretched their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Petty in the 31st minute.
Freshmen Jason Olinger and Eli Westers were credited with assists. The Scots got one goal back right before halftime to make the score 2-1 at the break.
Alma leveled the score with a goal 8:49 into the second half. The score stayed that way until the closing minutes of the game. With 2:21 left, the Scots netted the game-winning goal off a set piece.
Olivet recorded 11 shots in the game to 21 for Alma. Law led the way with five shots. Senior Ryan Grashik played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
"We must continue to learn," said Bulley. "There are signs we are beginning to grow in a positive manner. Ali finished a wonderful delivery from Jordan Terry after beating his man down the line and Greg Petty finished superbly over the head of the goalkeeper and two covering defenders."
The Comets are back on the road next Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. against Albion College.
