OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team started Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with a 5-1 loss to Kalamazoo College today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
"My heart goes out to the lads this evening," said Olivet Head Coach Dan Bulley. "We came out slow and lost the game based on our first half performance. We cannot take anything away from Kalamazoo. They are a team who will compete for the MIAA title this year with the quality and experience they have."
The Hornets led 2-0 behind goals in the 27th and 41st minute. Kyle Hernandez completed a hat trick with two goals of the game in a span of 94 seconds. Olivet scored its only goal in the 74th minute. Freshman Alistair Law sent a crossing pass from the left side of the field into the box, where freshman Jason Olinger buried a shot from five yards out into the goal. Kalamazoo scored its final goal a little more than two minutes later on a penalty kick.
The Hornets peppered the goal with 24 total shots, placing 10 on-frame. The Comets had only six shots, including two for sophomore Evan Shambaugh. Senior Ryan Grashik allowed the five goals and made four saves, while playing 75 minutes and 57 seconds in goal. Freshman Noah Thelen finished the game in net.
"I counted eight freshman on the field at one point along with two sophomores," said Bulley. "We have to play the cards we are dealt each year. People keep asking me how we are doing and is everything ok? My response is, 'YES we are doing just fine.'
"With youth comes mistakes and inexperience. We are rebuilding here at Olivet and the players understand that. We have a togetherness that is stronger than past years and this is coming from within the team. Results aside, we have a recipe for success here and our young players are on a learning curve right now."
Olivet returns to the pitch Saturday when play at Alma. Game time is noon.
"We will keep spirits high as we have to look forward to playing again against Alma," said Bulley. "Do not expect us to lay down and die. These are fine young men and we will bounce back."
