Men’s soccer team defeats Augustana, 2-0, for first win of season
The Olivet College men’s soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule by defeating Augustana (Ill.) College, 2-0, today at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Illinois.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Olivet College men's soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule by defeating Augustana (Ill.) College, 2-0, today at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Illinois.
"We will enjoy our five-hour bus ride back to Olivet," said head coach Dan Bulley. "I cannot describe how good it feels get a win. It is great seeing our young men learning from mistakes, maturing at a rapid rate and getting rewarded for all their efforts."
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes of play. The Comets got on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute when sophomore Jordan Terry netted his first collegiate goal after receiving a pass from freshman Eli Westers. Freshman Alistair Law added an insurance goal three minutes and 14 seconds later.
For the game, Olivet had eight shots to 17 for the Vikings. Augustana also had six more corner kicks, 11-5. Both teams were whistled for 12 fouls.
Sophomore Vince Geremia led the Comets with three shots. Law had two shots. Senior Ryan Grashik made seven saves, while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
"Jordan and Alistair both had great finishes on their goal," said Bulley. "Also, a big shout out to Ryan for his role and performance today. This result is what we needed as we start conference play this week."
The Comets will now prepare for their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener Wednesday afternoon against Kalamazoo College. Game time at the Cutler Athletic Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m.
