Meldrum’s goal lifts men’s soccer team to 2-1 win over North Park

OLIVET, Mich. – Sophomore Matt Meldrum (Chesterfield Twp./Anchor Bay) scored with 3:24 left in the game to lift the Olivet College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over North Park (Ill.) University today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
After a scoreless battle in the first half, the Vikings found the back of the net in the 58th minute with an unassisted tally. The Comets scored the equalizer less than 10 minutes later in the 66th minute. Junior Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta) scored off a pass from junior Jared Wilson-Santos (Lansing/Everett).
Meldrum scored the game-winning goal at the 86:36 mark. Wilson-Santos and sophomore Michael Moscone (Washington Twp./Warren De La Salle) were each credited with an assist on the goal.
Olivet finished the game with 12 shots to 13 for North Park. Puente had three shots, while seniors Connor Plagens (South Lyon) and Adam Wright (Southend, England/Walled Lake Western) had two shots apiece. In goal, sophomore Ryan Grashik (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) posted his first collegiate win.
The Comets now turn their attention to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. They will travel to play Albion College in their league opener Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
