Werner-Hoskins scores only goal in 1-0 double overtime win for men’s soccer team
In a battle for first-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings, the Olivet College men’s soccer team defeated Kalamazoo College, 1-0, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The game also featured two regionally-ranked teams, as the Comets entered the game ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Central Region poll, while the Hornets were No. 10.
OLIVET, Mich. – In a battle for first-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings, the Olivet College men's soccer team defeated Kalamazoo College, 1-0, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The game also featured two regionally-ranked teams, as the Comets entered the game ranked No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Central Region poll, while the Hornets were No. 10.
Olivet, No. 8 in the NSCAA national rankings, scored the only goal one minute and one second into the second overtime period. Freshman Michael Moscone (Washington Twp./Warren De La Salle) found the ball at the middle of the field, and chipped it over the heads of the center backs and to the feet of sophomore Esteban Russell (DeWitt). Russell took a touch past the keeper, and hit a shot off the post. The ball ricocheted back to the penalty area, where freshman Cory Werner-Hoskins (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) buried his shot to the middle of the net.
The Hornets started the game with the most offensive pressure, as they outshot the Comets 5-3 in the first half. Olivet got better attacking the ball in the second half, and had a 13-3 shot advantage in the second half and two overtime periods. For the game, the Comets doubled up the Hornets in total shots, 16-8.
Russell led the way with five shots, while freshman Austin Dunn (Perry) had four. Sophomore Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) played the entire game in goal, and made six saves.
With the win, Olivet remains unbeaten with a 9-0-1 overall record and hosts Adrian College Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
