Lang and Smyser earn MIAA Player of the Week honors
Olivet College freshman goalkeeper Alex Lang and sophomore midfielder Fred Smyser have earned MIAA Player of the Week honors for men’s soccer. Lang is the Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Smyser is the Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
OLIVET, Mich. – Olivet College freshman goalkeeper Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) and sophomore midfielder Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) have earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Week honors for men's soccer. Lang is the Co-Defensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Paul Austin from Hope. Smyser is the Co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Justin Reamon from Hope.
Lang posted two shutout wins, including a 1-0 win over Calvin College in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. Earlier in the week, he shutout Adrian College, 1-0. For the week, he made 14 saves. For the season, Lang ranked among the league leaders in shutouts (tied for 2nd, eight), saves (4th, 73), save percentage (4th, .802) and goals against average (4th, 1.04).
Smyser scored the Comets' only goal in the 1-0 win over Calvin. He also had the only goal in Olivet's 4-1 loss to Hope in the championship game. For the season, Smyser scored a team-leading six goals, including four game-winning goals. He also had three assists for 15 total points.
