Men's soccer team beats Calvin, 1-0, to advance to MIAA Tournament championship game
The Olivet College men's soccer team beat Calvin College, 1-0, in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament semifinals this afternoon at Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids. With the win, Olivet advances to play at Hope College in the tournament championship tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team beat Calvin College, 1-0, in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament semifinals today at Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids. With the win, the #4 seed Comets advance to play at #2 seed Hope College in the MIAA Tournament championship game tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Olivet scored its goal in the 11th minute. Sophomore Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) sent a pass into the box to sophomore Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern). Smyser knocked the ball with his chest and buried a shot at the near post. Each team finished the first half with six shots, and the Knights out-cornered the Comets, 6-3.
Calvin turned the offensive pressure up in the second half, out-shooting Olivet 10-3. The Comets did have a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
For the game, the Knights had a 16-9 edge in shots, but a smaller 4-2 margin in shots-on-goal. Freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) led the way with three shots, while freshman Camden Iwasko (Livonia/Stevenson) was next with two. Four other players each had one. In goal, freshman Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) collected four saves.
