Men’s soccer team beats Trine 1-0 for ninth shutout of 2011
The Olivet College men’s soccer team shutout Trine (Ind.) University, 1-0, tonight under the lights at the Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium in Angola, Ind. With the win, Olivet records its NCAA Division III leading ninth shutout of the season and continues to sit on top of the MIAA standings with a perfect 5-0-0 record.
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College men's soccer team shutout Trine (Ind.) University, 1-0, tonight under the lights at the Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium in Angola, Ind. With the win, Olivet records its NCAA Division III leading ninth shutout of the season and continues to sit on top of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings with a perfect 5-0-0 record.
Olivet led 1-0 at halftime behind a goal by sophomore Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) in the 24th minute. Sophomore Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) was credited with an assist. That goal was the first allowed by the Thunder in MIAA play and only the second during the entire 2011 season.
The Comets finished the game with a 13-11 edge in shots, including a small 6-5 margin in shots-on-goal. Wright and freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) each had four shots. The goal by Wright was his second game-winner of the season, as he had the only goal in Olivet's 1-0 win over Kalamazoo College. Freshman keeper Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) made five saves and lowered his goals against average to 0.24.
The Comets will host Calvin College in an important MIAA contest Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Knights sit in second-place behind Olivet in the league standings with a 4-1 record.
