ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team posted its eighth shutout of the season, including seventh in a row, with a 1-0 win over Alma College today at Scotland Yard in Alma. With the win, the Comets have recorded 673 consecutive scoreless minutes of soccer in the stretch.
Olivet improves its overall record to 7-1-1 and stays in first-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 3-0 record. Alma slips to 3-5 and 0-3.
There was no score until the 67th minute. Freshman Evan Simpson (Washington/Romeo) played the ball to the feet of freshman Jared Wilson (Lansing/Everett) at the top of the box. Wilson ripped a shot with his left foot into the far corner of the goal.
Both teams finished the game with 13 shots, but Olivet had a 6-5 edge in shots-on-goal. Freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) had three, while three other players each had two. In net, freshman Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) played all 90 minutes and collected four saves.
"Today was another great day," said Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman. "To get three more points on the road was good. If you want to have the opportunity to win a league title, you have to win games on the road, and we were fortunate to do that twice this week. Evan stepped up and played a great game."
Olivet will host Hope College Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m.
