Men’s soccer team blows away Bluffton, 7-0

Freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) put Olivet ahead 1-0 with a goal off a pass from sophomore Zach Piotrowski (Jackson/Lumen Christi). Sophomore Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) made the score 2-0 after receiving a pass from freshman Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta). Russell closed the first half scoring with a goal. Fellow freshman Jared Wilson (Lansing/Everett) earned the assist.
In the second half, four different Comets scored a goal and another four were credited with an assist. Piotrowski scored the first goal off an assist from Russell. Senior Ross Cutler (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) scored next on an assist from junior Cole Dehen (Kentwood/East Kentwood).
Russell added his third goal of the game and fifth of the season, and freshman John Leutzinger (Washington/Warren DeLaSalle) picked up the assist. Puente capped the scoring with his first collegiate goal, and freshman Camden Iwasko (Livonia/Stevenson) had the assist.
For the game, Olivet out-shot the Beavers, 32-3 and out-cornered them, 9-0. Russell led the way with nine shots, including six on-goal. Wright took four shots. Freshman Matt Van Houten (Northville) started his first collegiate contest and played the first half in goal. He made the only save for the Comets in the game. Junior Sam Cusmano (Haslett) played the second half in net.
"It was nice to see a lot of different goal scorers," said Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman. "As our only senior, it was nice to see Ross score a goal. We are happy with the result, but we now know the tougher part of our schedule is ahead of us."
The Comets will now resume Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play next Wednesday, Sept. 21, when they make the short trip to play Albion College at 4 p.m.
