OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with a 1-0 win over Kalamazoo College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Comets improve their overall record to 4-1, with all four wins being by shutout.
Olivet jumped on the Hornets with a goal in the 11th minute. Sophomore Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) played the ball from the middle of the field into the right corner and to the feet of junior Matt Garza (Saline). Garza took the defender on and served the ball across the box to the near post to sophomore Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western). Wright then half-volleyed the ball in mid-air into the far corner of the goal.
For the game, the Comets had a 14-11 advantage in shots, including a slim 6-5 edge in shots-on-goal. Wright topped the team with four shots, while freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) had three. Each took two shots-on-goal. Freshman Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) recorded his first individual shutout, as he played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.
Olivet will next be in action at Manchester (Ind.) College Friday evening at 5 p.m.
