OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team blanked non-conference rival Rochester College, 2-0, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Olivet did not dent the scoreboard until one second past the 78th minute. Junior Jake Jensen (Vicksburg) played the ball in the middle of field and passed it down the left flank to sophomore Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western). Wright sent a cross pass over to junior Matt Garza (Saline), who headed the ball past the keeper from six yards out.
The Comets scored an insurance goal with 5 minutes, 24 seconds left in the contest. Freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) had his shot on a breakaway clang off the far post. Junior Dalton Guggemos (Laingsburg) gathered the rebound, and sent his shot into the goal.
Olivet outshot the Warriors, 26-3, including a 12-2 in shots-on-goal. Russell led the way with nine shots, while Wright had four. Freshman Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) and junior Sam Cusmano (Haslett) played the first and second half, respectively in goal. Each made one save.
The Comets will begin Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Kalamazoo College at 4 p.m.
