ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Olivet College men's soccer team fell to Adrian College, 5-3, tonight at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium in Adrian.
On their first shot attempt, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead when Billy Cremeans found the back of the net just 5:05 into the game. Olivet tied the game at 1-1 when senior Mike May (Mason) sent a shot over the keeper's head, off his hands and into the goal. Junior Chase Anthes (Ludington) earned the assist after sending a long pass from the middle of the field and into the box. Adrian regained the lead with a goal by Marcus Derrick-Huie in the 44th minute.
In the second half, the Comets tied the game at the 59:27 mark on a penalty kick goal by senior Matt Manning (Charlotte). He was granted the PK attempt after the Adrian keeper was whistled for a foul inside the box. The Bulldogs went ahead 3-1 with a goal in the 78th minute and added two more goals with just 5:17 and 1:25 left in regulation.
Like its second goal, Olivet made the score 5-3 on a penalty kick goal. This one was by senior Clay Robinson (Marshall) scored a penalty kick goal with 1:08 remaining in the game. It was his first goal of the season and just the third of his career.
For the game, Adrian out-shot the Comets, 23-8. Eight different Olivet players each had a shot. Senior Ethan Felsing (Mason) collected six saves.
The Comets (12-6-1, 7-5-1 MIAA) will host Hope College in their regular season finale Saturday at noon. For the second straight season, Olivet has a chance to spoil Hope's bid for a MIAA championship. A year ago, the Flying Dutchmen needed a win against the Comets to secure an outright league title, but the teams settled for a 0-0 tie and in the final game of the season, Calvin beat Hope to win the MIAA championship. In addition, the Comets defeated Hope, 3-2 in double overtime, in their meeting earlier this season at the VanAndel Soccer Stadium in Holland.
