OLIVET, Mich. -- In a battle of regionally-ranked teams, the Olivet College men's soccer team played to a 0-0 double overtime draw against Calvin College today at Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids. Olivet entered the game ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Central Regional rankings, while Calvin was No. 3 in the regional rankings and No. 6 in the D3soccer.com Top 25 poll.
For the game, the Comets took nine shots and had a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks over the Knights. Sophomore Matt Garza (Saline) and freshman Daniel Hampsten (Plainwell) each took two shots, while five other players had a shot apiece. In goal, senior Ethan Felsing (Mason) faced 15 shots and made eight saves.
"I definitely would like to give a lot of credit to our three captains," said Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman. "Ethan (Felsing) was outstanding in goal, Matt (Manning) was great on the back line, and Mike (May) did a great job up top until we pulled him out of the game with a possible injury. We did not go deep into our bench, but the guys who played gave an excellent effort. To tie a Top 25 program on its home field was a very big and positive step for our program."
Olivet will play two home games next week. On Wednesday, the Comets welcome Trine (Ind.) University to the Cutler Athletic Complex for a 4 p.m. game, and on Saturday, Adrian College visits for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
