OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College men's soccer team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Calvin College today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The loss slips the Comets into fourth-place in the MIAA standings with a 6-3-1 record and 19 points. The Knights move into a first-place tie with Hope with 21 points. Adrian is third with 20 points.
The score stayed scoreless until there was 2:12 left in regulation. Scott Hooker scored for Calvin off a sit piece from just outside the 18-yard box.
For the game, the Knights outshot Olivet, 20-7. Freshman Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) paced the Comets with three shots, while freshmen Daniel Hampsten (Plainwell) and Adam Wright (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) each took two shots. In goal, senior Ethan Felsing (Mason) stopped six Calvin shots.
"This is a very tough loss," said Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman. "But, I've got to tip my hat to Calvin. They were very deserving of the win. The game was going exactly how we planned it until a failed clearance led to the goal. We played with a lot of young kids. They showed a lot of character in a big game. I know we will be back in a similar situation and today's game will help us then. We now have to move forward and do what we can do to get three points.
The Comets travel to Angola, Ind., to play Trine University Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
