ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Olivet College men's soccer team came from behind to beat Trine (Ind.) University, 2-1 in double overtime, today in Angola, Ind.
Trine led 1-0 at halftime behind a penalty kick goal in the 27th minute. Olivet scored the equalizer in the 59th minute. Off a corner kick by freshman Alex Alvarez (Eastpointe/East Detroit), freshman Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/ Forest Hills Eastern) buried the shot into the ball. Two minutes into the second overtime period, sophomore Matt Garza (Saline) headed the ball into the goal on a corner kick by freshman Daniel Hampsten (Plainwell).
The Comets posted a 22-19 advantage in shots, including a 14-10 edge in shots on-goal. Garza topped the team with six shots, four on-goal. Senior Ethan Felsing (Mason) was the keeper for the entire game and collected nine saves.
"We are really excited with another positive result on the road," said Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman. "By getting behind early, our guys showed a lot of character to fight back and get the win. Mike May came off the bench to play in a game for the first time in almost a month. He gave us an emotional boost."
The Comets (12-5-1, 7-4-1 MIAA) will play their final two MIAA games next week, beginning Wednesday at Adrian College. The game will be played under the lights of the Performance Stadium in Adrian at p.m. Next Saturday, Nov. 6, Olivet hosts Hope College at noon.
