OSHKOSH, Wis. -- The Olivet College men's soccer team blanked Marian (Wis.) University, 2-0, this afternoon in a second round game of the 26th Annual University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Valley Cup Invitational at the J.J. Keller Field in Oshkosh, Wis.
Olivet scored its first goal in the 11th minute. Junior Chase Anthes (Ludington) threw the ball into senior Mike May (Mason). May then sent the ball over to freshman Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern), who buried his shot into the goal. The score remained 1-0 at halftime. With just under eight minutes left in the game, May scored a goal of his own off an assist from sophomore Matt Garza (Saline).
For the game, the Comets outshot the Sabres, 17-6 and out-cornered them, 6-0. May led the way with five shots, followed by Smyser and freshman Daniel Hampsten (Plainwell) with four apiece. Senior Ethan Felsing (Mason) earned the shutout in goal.
"We showed some character after a disappointing loss yesterday," said Head Coach Chad Wiseman. "We were much more organized in the midfield and also played a solid defense."
Olivet (1-1) will return to action Wednesday when it travels to play a non-conference game at Defiance (Ohio) College at 4 p.m.
