The Olivet College men's soccer team improved its overall record to 10-6-2 with a 2-0 shutout victory over Trine (Ind.) University this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Four minutes, 15 seconds into the game, an Olivet player received a red card, and the Comets played a man down for the rest of the game. Olivet struck first in the 19th minute when junior Matt Manning (Charlotte) scored a goal. After missing his own penalty kick shot, he knocked in the rebound when the Trine keeper failed to control the ball. The score stayed 1-0 at halftime.
In the 60th minute, sophomore Anthony Sovis (Williamston) found the net for his first collegiate goal. Off a set piece, Manning slipped the ball to freshman Matt Garza (Saline) on the left side. Garza found junior Mike May (Mason) at the far post, and May headed the ball back across the box to Sovis, who scored the goal.
Olivet returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts MIAA-leader Hope College at 3 p.m. Earlier this season, the Comets beat Hope, 1-0, at the VanAndel Soccer Stadium in Holland.
